The Art of Tattooing
Program Information
This program, The Art of Tattooing, fufills the state requirements for tattoo artists seeking their Permanent Color and Tattoo Artist License. The course is 360 hours of education with 210 hours of theory and 150 hours of practical learning. There are 6 lessons in this course which include "Oregon Administrative Rule and Laws", "Safety, Santiation and Sterilization", "The Skin, Disorders and Disease", "Machines, Needles and Equipment", "Design, Color Theory and Aftercare" and " Client Services and Business Operations". The practical learning includes observation of tattoo artists and business operations, hands on learning with second skin and finally 50 supervised procedures on human skin. The program is offered on a full time basis of 6 hours daily, 5 days a week. At a full time pace, a student can expect to finish school in 6-12 months. The program is also offered on a part time basis. All students must be at least 18 years of age and provide a diploma or GED certification. This program will prepare students for a career in the tattooing industry.
Facilities and Equipment
All texts for this course are provided for each student. Material is taken from the internet and published books. All machines, equipment and supplies are provided by the school for students to use while enrolled. Internet access is provided as well as audio/visual learning through instructional DVD's. The classroom consists of 6 practical learning stations, 2 drawing stations and an audio/visual station adequate for 8 students. Professional tattoo artists and business operations can be studied and eventually participated in by students as they progress through the program.
Admissions Requirements and Process
Applicants for The Art of Tattooing must schedule an appointment to submit completed and signed application forms and tour the school. There is no application fee. To apply for the program, applicants must provide proof that they are at least 18 years of age and a copy of their High School Diploma or GED Certification. Admissions decisions are based on the application. Applicants will be notified of the school's decision. After notification of acceptance, applicants will have 5 business days to complete the enrollment agreement documents. We recommend that you register early, as classes fill quickly.
Tuition and Fee Policy
The total cost for the Art of Tattooing Program is $8000.00. This includes an registration fee of $150.00 which is due within 5 business days of acceptance of application along with signed enrollment documents. The remaining balance of $7,850.00 is due upon beginning of coursework.
A student may cancel enrollment by giving written notice within 5 business days of the date of enrollment and all monies shall be refunded. After 5 business days of enrollment and prior to the commencement of classes, the school may retain only the enrollment fee of $150.00. If a student withdrawn prior to completion of 50 percent or 180 hours of the contracted instructional program, the student shall be entitled to a pro rata refund of the tuition paid for the program, less the enrollment fee and any equipment purchased with the equipment and supplies fee. If the student withdrawn upon completion of 50 percent or 180 hours of the contracted instructional program, the student shall be obligated for the tuition charged for the entire instructional program and shall not be entitled to any refund.
Grading System
Students are graded on their closed book tests at the end of each lesson. A closed book test must passed by at least 85% to continue on to the next lesson. Students are given 3 opportunities within 3 consecutive weeks to pass each lesson by the required grade. If a student does not pass a lesson test within the given 3 weeks, a written warning will be issued (see student conduct and discipline) The final test which is a compelation of the closed book lesson tests must be passed by 90% before certification is awarded. Students must pass practical hands-on training checklist by 90% to be signed off on a completed procedure and go on to the next procedure. A final practical hands-on training checklist must be passed by 100% before certification is awarded.
Students must maintain satisfactory academic and attendance progress while enrolled in training. Each student is evaluated and given a progress report monthly. Progress records are kept by the school until course grades are transcripted. Academic transcripts are maintained in the student file.
Certificate and Placement
Upon completion of 360 hours of coursework, 50 completed procedures, a passing grade of at least 90% on the closed book final test and a passing grade of at least 100% on the final hands on practical learning checklist a student will be awarded a certification of completion of The Art of Tattooing program. This certification is required by the State of Oregon to take the Permanent Color and Tattoo Artist Licensing Exam. After a student passes the State Exam and is issued a State License we will assist them in finding job placement in either our shop, if positions are available or other local shops. Graduates will have an adequate tattoo portfolio and flash portfolio to show prospective employers. They will also be given a letter of recommendation by our director to submit to possible employers. If graduates have no disciplinary or attendance reviews while in school they may be eligible for a position in our graduate stations. These are stations for recent graduates to practice tattooing customers while they look for employment in the industry.
